Jars Trauma Care Conference 2024

Trauma is a universal human experience that transcends borders and cultures, impacting the lives of individuals and communities around the world. Africa, with its rich diversity and unique challenges, has seen its share of traumatic events, including conflicts, natural disasters, displacement, and interpersonal violence.

It is time to bridge mental health, particularly trauma-focused disparities, for the well-being and development of the African continent.

The African Trauma Care Alliance (ATCA) is delighted to announce the 3rd annual African Trauma Care Conference (ATCC 2024). As an organization dedicated to advocating for mental health, affordable mental health & trauma care, and the integration of trauma care as a matter of policy, ATCA recognizes the critical importance of addressing trauma in African contexts.

The 3rd installment of the Africa conference aims to bring together mental health professionals, policymakers, educators, and stakeholders from various sectors to discuss and strategize on integrating trauma care across different systems in Africa.

Conference Theme and Focus Areas

The theme for ATCC 2024 is "Bridging Gaps: Integrating Trauma Care into African Systems."

This theme underscores the imperative to incorporate trauma-focused approaches across healthcare, education, social work, and corporate systems. We aim to highlight the challenges and opportunities in diverse African contexts, particularly in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

The integration of trauma care into various systems is crucial for several reasons:

  • It ensures a more holistic approach to mental health and well-being
  • It helps in early identification and intervention of trauma-related issues
  • It creates more resilient communities and organizations
  • It promotes a culture of empathy and understanding in all sectors of society

The conference will address the following key areas:

  • Policy development for trauma-focused care in African contexts
  • Trauma care for non-medical mental health practitioners
  • Community-based trauma care approaches
  • Current state of trauma care in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and Ethiopia
  • Challenges in integrating trauma care across healthcare, education, social work, and corporate systems
  • Successful models and best practices in trauma care integration
  • Innovative approaches to trauma-informed practices in resource-limited settings
  • Cultural competence in trauma care within African contexts

You will engage in interactive sessions, network with fellow professionals, and discover innovative solutions to improve service delivery and enhance the African systems.

Objectives of the Conference

  • Enhanced knowledge and skills in trauma care integration across various systems
  • Strengthened networks among professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders
  • Development of action plans for implementing trauma-informed approaches in different sectors
  • Policy recommendations for governments and organizations in target countries
  • Increased awareness of the importance of trauma care in African contexts
